Official Appeal for a CrossFit Games Pistol Marksmanship Event
Thank you!
I began combining firearms training and fitness in 2004 with Anlance Security when I was a bodyguard and Coach TK and I used to do tabata squats and max reps push-up in 2 minutes before doing a course of fire at Johnson Creek Gun Club in 2008. I stopped promoting firearms openly in 2011 after some political backlash (a great deal of our education comes from our culture and Portland is incredibly ignorant when it comes to gun facts and stats).
It is great to see that there are other CrossFitters that understand the kind of training that comes from shooting. Control, balance, and accuracy are just a few physical skills honed during shooting matches. Since we are dealing with weapons, a keen attention to detail is also required which increases a sense of overall situational awareness. Unfortunately, due to the political atmosphere surrounding firearms and the difference in state laws around the country, I doubt we will ever see a shooting event in a CrossFit competition.
Would any of YOU like to see shooting in a CF event? Are there any of you that want to improve your marksmanship skills with a pistol or rifle? Post to comments.
"A strong body makes the mind strong . As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks." - Thomas Jefferson
YES! Duh. ;)

I would totally be down for a shooting event at CF. Do you have to have a lot of experience? I have only had experience with shotguns and dart guns from when I did field research.

Since we are talking about moving and shooting and/or stress shooting, I would say that a certain amount of experience would be necessary. You'd want to start with shooting from a standing position, no movement, near target, single target. The idea is to get familiar with grip, sight picture, stance, recoil, and trigger press. Once you are confident with your firearm, you can begin to increase complexity - moving while shooting, multiple targets, moving targets, tactical sequence, under fatigue, etc.
