Last night the first workout of the 5-week 2012 CrossFit Games Open was released. Several of our Teammates have registered but all of us will be performing the workouts they release. On Friday of each week, the Games Open WOD will be programmed as the HEL WOD. This way, the Teammates that are registered don't have to go out of their way to do the workout and the Teammates that are not registered can compare their scores without having to compete. (Be advised: I do not know the Games Open WOD ahead of time but I do write our HEL WODs ahead of time - Thursday, Friday, and Saturday may have similar movements due to the randomness of Friday.)
Since the Teammates that are registered have to have an individual judge watching and counting each repetition, the next 5 Friday WOD s will be ran a little differently.
For those who are registered, you will pair up immediately and gather for the WOD brief. During that brief, you will told what the workout is, what each exercise is, how it is performed, what specifically is looked for in each movement for a good rep, and what would be considered a 'no rep' or bad movement. Once EVERYONE understands and all questions are answered, we will execute the workout FGB style - one partner works, the other partner counts AND judges. Then you will switch. Preferably, everyone registered for the Games Open will workout at the same time. I know this is unlikely, however. It does behove you to find someone to workout against that is at a similar skill level - but you will each need judges as well. As we know, competition increases intensity and performance.
Note: judges to not have to be competing or registered or even doing the workout. The judge need only understand the movements and what is required and be able to watch you for the entire workout.
For those of you not registered, your Friday will be similar to the usual training day. Once I have concluded the brief for the registered Teammates and everyone is warmed-up and ready to go, you will be in the first group and not have to hang around for the second group unless you volunteer to judge or watch. I am going to oversee the entire WOD (both groups, judging the judges and watching the non-registered Team).
I do reserve the right to alter this format if the situation dictates but for the most part Friday will be done in two groups, FGB style.
For those of you interested, I've started a HEL Leader board on the right portion of the whiteboard. Registered Teammates will show up on the board once scores are updated. Non-registered Teammates that write down their own scores, do their own math, and rank themselves from the CrossFit Games website can also put down where they stand in the Open.
Good luck to everyone and have fun over the next 5 weeks - the anticipation of these workouts coming out every week makes me feel like a kid on Christmas!
