Ruger LCP .380
Small enough to fit in your hoodie pocket or purse and hammerless so it won't get caught-up if youhave to shoot from the pocket. Fairly new but a great for high concealment or small hands (ladies) - there are a few of use carrying these now.
If you want to participate in the CHL/CWP classes this Saturday, you MUST register for the class. With all of the response I received from the blog comments and in person, there are only a few people registered for the class!
If you want to pay in cash (you can only pay by CC or Debit on-line), then you must write your name on the whiteboard and COMMIT to being at the class.
Due to the interest generated on the blog and discussions in the Lab, I was able to get the guys from Tactical to COME TO US. But they aren't going to do it with only 4 people registered and will have to reschedule. This is a great opportunity to get your Oregon CHL and Utah CWP (which has reciprocity in 30 states) without a lot of effort. These guys will even do your fingerprints and mail the package FOR YOU! IF you ever wanted to get your CHL, now is the time! Go to the mountain on Sunday!
For those of you who are concerned about carrying without training:
We are likely going to be doing monthly trips to the Johnson Creek indoor shooting range. You will have to buy your own rounds (not sold at the range) but there are targets available. There will be plenty of opportunity to train with your firearm.
But it doesn't do you much protection if it's sitting in a locked box on the top shelf in your closet! Get your CHL and TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN.
Register Here for the CHL/CWP class.
If you have questions, you must see me a.s.a.p.
Train for chaos - see you in the Lab!
"I don't even call it violence when it's in self defense; I call it intelligence." - Malcolm X
With all the social issue around hand guns and all the violent crimes (including the most recent in Arizona)…why is a CrossFit even talking about Guns/Guns license? Thumbs down on this and everyone should be outraged about it! This is a fitness facility, not a shooting range.

David,
I have to agree. While I fully support any citizen's right to own a gun with license, I am tiring of scrolling through this stuff to read what our coach has to say about fitness and lifting form.
I understand this is a lifestyle, passion, hobby, whatever for many of our members...but could you add a link so the rest of us don't have to read about guns. I'll go to 24 hour fitness for tickets to the gun show.
Thanks, Kris

Outraged? Really?
I believe something simple: everybody ought to take a personal responsibility for his or her own safety. I think CF is a part of this because being fit makes you safer, i.e. less of a target.
I offered the CHL/CWP class as an opportunity for anyone who thought it was too hard to get a CHL to get theirs at home (the Lab).
With all the difference of opinion about guns, gun safety, and gun control, I'm not going to get into a big debate on the comments section of my website. You are free to discuss it with me but the statistics will show that a well-armed populace has a lower violent crime rate than a populace that has had the guns taken away from law-abiding citizens. That is a fact - criminals are less likely to act violent when they know their potential victim is armed and MORE likely to act when they know their potential victim is UNARMED! You are welcome to debate gun control with me but:
1. you will lose, and
2. don't do it on my blog
As far as what this as has to do with fitness...
HEL is a GPP facility that develops fitness as a MEANS of protection. If that only means you train to be bigger, stronger, and faster that's fine! It will still make you safer because you are LESS OF A TARGET. But we do more than that too. PDR is only a single step up a long staircase. If you don't want to participate, that's ok!
BUT OTHER PEOPLE WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS I OFFER, HAVE BEEN TRAINED IN, AND AM WILLING TO TEACH. If you don't like it, don't participate! But why make comments like the one's above? Because you don't want to carry a firearm, you think no one should? Because a Congresswoman got shot in Arizona, we should all give our guns to the government? If anything, that tragedy is an example of why we should ALL be armed - if someone ran up on me and shot me in the face, I know that any one of my buddies (all of whom carry) would stop the attack (hopefully before I got shot). But if no one but the criminal has the gun...well, I guess everyone gets shot until the bullets are gone, then we wait 5-10 more cops and an ambulance to show up.
Now what sounds outrageous?!?
Look, like I said: the CHL/CWP is for people who want it. If you don't, fine.
Bottom line - I wanted to set up the classes for everyone to get a OR CHL, your right as a free, law-abiding, U.S. citizen under the Constitution. If you would rather rely on law enforcement to protect you, then well, that's your choice. But you're all CrossFitters - you all know that seconds count. And when seconds count, law enforcement is usually minutes away!
From Thomas Jefferson - a man who believed in liberty:
"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks."

With all due respect… It is not ideal timing, but this has been planned for weeks. Is it ever a good time to hold a cert considering violence occurs EVERYDAY around the world?
I live alone off a busy street in NW Portland. On more than one occasion I have felt unsafe walking to my car or front door. What chance do I have to out power a male with 50+ pounds of mass? None. It makes no difference how much I can deadlift or how many muscle-ups I can do. Thankfully, HEL also offers SPEAR and now the opportunity for me to carry a concealed weapon should I make that choice. I think my father would sleep better at night knowing that I might take advantage of what my “gym” has to offer and may even want to shake Kevin’s hand. CFHEL is not just a fitness gym and I believe Kevin is ahead of his time. I have known HEL’s vision from the very beginning, read back to the early days of Kevin’s program and ideas – several great videos of Kevin going “ninja style”, so this gun cert is no surprise to me. HEL is not a good match for everyone – that’s why you have the option to train at Bally’s or 24 Hour Fitness.

Amen, Jen! I feel lucky to be apart of such a forward thinking 'gym'!

Hello CrossfitHel team. Effective today I cancelled my membership with Kevin. I feel that in today’s world we all need to take a stand for something we feel passionate about, especially when we see something wrong. All too often, in today’s world, citizens are complacent within their lives and ignore social and economic injustices….having a business promote guns is completely against my core values and is something that I can support, I feel like I would be a hypocrite if I did so. Posting images of guns, make and model…addressing how you can conceal and ‘shoot from the pocket’ is indeed promotion.
This isn’t about me being ‘right’ or Kevin being ‘wrong’… it’s just that I need to stand up for what I personally believe in…and I hope everyone can at least respect that.
Peace to you all in 2011.
David

If we are looking forward for our safety, we tend to be more conscious on the kind of safety that we are looking. We indeed have to take extra care and be able to address the liability of our actions. This is a worthwhile experience reading your post. Thanks a lot for sharing your views pertaining to the topic. Keep it up.
